In honour of World Drowning Prevention Day on Thursday 25th July, we’re shining a spotlight on a very special group of swimmers who embody the lifelong benefits of staying active in the water physically, mentally, and socially.
Meet Lee, Mark, Adrian, and Ross, four long time members of Sans Souci Leisure Centre who have been swimming here since the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Known affectionately as "The Table of Knowledge", this group starts each day with a swim and a coffee and plenty of friendly conversation.
Here’s a little about each of their swimming journeys:
- Lee has been swimming for 40 years after a back injury, and now swims 1km each morning—including 300m of backstroke.
- Mark has swum for over 40 years to maintain his health and fitness.
- Adrian swims for recovery and joint health after a knee replacement, calling swimming a “great alternative to save your limbs.” He prefers the indoor pool for the warmth!
- Ross, now 82, has been swimming since he was just 3 years old, an incredible 79 year journey. He still clocks 300m every morning, no exceptions.
We asked the group what advice they’d give to someone new to swimming. Their answers are full of wisdom!
While the swimming is what brought them here, it’s the sense of community that’s kept them coming back for decades. They say the daily routine of exercise, coffee, and connection has added years to their lives and they’re always welcoming new members to the table.
“Socialising and exercise are key to avoiding isolation. That’s what keeps us young.”
Whether you’re after a fitness routine, injury recovery, or simply want a reason to get up early and connect with others, Sans Souci Leisure Centre is the place to do it!
