Every gym and aquatic centre has its dedicated early birds, the ones who roll out of a warm bed and rock up at dawn, braving the frosty, pitch-black winter mornings day after day without fail. While the rest of the world is still hitting the snooze button, these members are already out on the floor and in the water, putting in the work and setting the standard for the day ahead.
They don’t just bring their gear; they bring the energy. This month, the focus is on highlighting the incredible members who physically and mentally warm up our facilities with their resilient, upbeat attitudes. Their dedication is contagious, proving that a little cold weather is absolutely no match for a strong routine and a positive outlook.
At Sans Souci, this infectious morning energy is perfectly embodied by our wonderful member, Paul. No matter the weather or the time of year, Paul is fiercely dedicated to his daily aquatic routine.

Since retiring in 2019, Paul has begun almost every single day with an early morning swim at the Sans Souci Pool. While he acknowledges that the cold mornings can be a hurdle for some, for him, the rewards are undeniable.
"Lap swimming is invigorating, but it is the gentle rhythm of following the black line along the bottom of the lane that clears my mind and prepares me for the day ahead, ‘Rise and glide’ has become my daily motto."
For Paul, the benefits of braving the chill extend far beyond physical fitness. An outdoor swim provides a fantastic low-impact, full-body workout while simultaneously energising him with fresh air and the first rays of morning sunshine. Most importantly, it has become the cornerstone of a healthy routine that has brought him into a wonderful community of friends at the pool.
As Paul perfectly sums it up:
"For me, following that black line each morning is more than exercise, it is a sure track to a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life."
